6 Tips for developing enterprise mobile apps

Building an enterprise app is a time consuming and complex task, much more so than people think. Having good developers and a ready and willing audience is half of the battle but it does not mean that the process of developing the app will be straight forward.

To create a truly successful mobile project with the greatest chance of success amongst your team, you need to consider the following 6 critical elements.

 

1. Stakeholder management

When launching a mobile project, you need to make sure you have the backing of a C-level individual within the business. This is usually the Chief Technology Officer, but depending on the project, it could also be someone from Corporate Communications, Marketing, or Finance. You should also consider keeping the number of stakeholders limited as working under the radar can provide quicker results and a much simpler product definition. Remember the saying “too many cooks spoil the broth”? Well this applies here- keep the team small and the concept simple for your best chance at success.

 

2. Platform evaluation

A mobile app should focus on one or two key goals so be sure to identify the main user stories and features that will define it. By using a Value Proposition Design approach, when planning you are able to highlight the pain points that the project is aiming to solve. Keep in mind throughout that a great app will instantly answer the question of “what is this app for?”

 

3. Define success criteria

Success criteria is a list of predetermined measurable outcomes that the project can, or should produce. They are factors that demonstrate a positive impact on customers, management, and other stakeholders. You should focus only on quantitative measures such as user adoption, device types, and performance- all of these can be defined, tracked and quantified, providing useful data and results.

 

4. User Experience

Employees are not going to just happily use your app because they have to- you need to make sure that the user experience is up to scratch to ensure a high level of adoption and engagement. If you don’t put in effort to ensure this, users will not want to use it and the situation could result in employee conflict, low ROI, and high rates of abandonment. Great design starts in the prototyping phase and continues throughout the whole build process. Engaging with stakeholders from start to finish is the best way to efficiently manage expectations.

 

5. Maintenance

You need to remember that all projects require ongoing maintenance, upgrades, debugging, changes, and enhancements, especially when it comes to mobile apps. Browsers and devices change all the time and you need to be ready to respond with the appropriate software and hardware updates as required. Doing so will ensure you are rewarded with ongoing user engagement, a higher ROI and long-term success.

 

6. Internal Marketing

Just launching the app in the app store doesn’t mean you will be successful because you still need to “sell” the app to your employees. By leveraging internal specialists to market the new app you can get the best success. Speak to people in HR, marketing, and communications to create a focussed campaign that will promote the app across multiple channels to garner maximum results
