What is the future of keyboards like? Let’s try and make an intelligent guess…

As computers become smaller and eventually virtual, there are going to be other ways for us to interact with them rather than the trusty traditional keyboard. Will this be the end of typing as we know it? Here are some possibilities…

1. Voice recognition

This has already started with the introduction of voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana and Alexa... although, there may remain some circumstances when written text will still be more suitable for introducing information into the computer such as when there are issues of confidentiality or when we don’t want to disturb other people around us.

2. Wearables

Devices you wear or even insert inside your body to help you interact digitally with the world around you could become more and more common.

3. Handcrafted keyboards

If you want to remain ‘old school’, you’ll be able to customize your keyboard and even make it with customised keyboards made from material of your own choosing and different colours to choose from.

4. Projection keyboards

With these kinds of keyboards, a laser projects a keyboard image onto a table or other flat surface, and when your finger ‘touches’ a key, a sensor or camera logs this as a keystroke.

5. Mind-control

While this might sound like something, out of a sci-fi film, there have been some big leaps in the mind-control space (which is also great news for anyone who has a disability such as paralysis). Interacting with a computer via thought alone is certainly an interesting prospect. In fact, thought-only typing is technically possible, but it is still a laborious process. While it doesn’t seem that it is going to be available any time soon, future generations may use it as commonly as we use the mouse.
