Malta Calendar of Events for August 2019

Here is a sample of the many cultural and artistic events taking place on the Maltese Islands during August 2019.

 

1. EXHIBITION – Behind Closed Doors: Fort St Angelo & the Royal Navy 1906 – 1979

A curated exhibition, marking the 40th anniversary since the departure of foreign military forces from Malta on 31 March 1979. This exhibition portrays life in Fort St Angelo in Vittoriosa, as well as the different roles of the Fort and the services it offered to the Royal Navy and its staff. Discover the numerous architectural modifications and why the fort was referred to as HMS Egmont and eventually HMS St Angelo, seen through the eyes of former service personnel who worked in this site. 2. ART: Inspired by China

The China Cultural Centre in Malta (CCC), annually sends a group of Maltese artists to China, to get a first-hand experience of the cultural, artistic and social milieu and transform this experience of feeling, sentiment and emotion into a tangible creative expression through painting, sculpture and photography, for their orientation and education and to share it with the Maltese and foreign visitors to the exhibition. Debbie Bonello, Andrew Borg, Damian Ebejer and Lucienne Spiteri are the participants in the 2018/19 project, the sixth in the series. Until 28 August at Skyparks Business Centre. 3. MUSIC: D Capitals Live at Cittadella

Open air concert under the baton of Mro. George Apap will feature renowned Maltese and international singers, together with the band's resident singers Francesca Sciberras, Jolene Samhan, and Fabian Galea. 4. FESTIVAL: Gozo Ceramics Festival

The Gozo Ceramics Festival is back once again for its 7th edition. Local and international ceramic artists will come together to showcase their talent in sculpting, hand modelling and more. 5. FESTIVAL: Delicata Wine Festival

With spectacular views across the Grand Harbour and Three Cities, this event combines culture, wine, and amazing scenery for what is sure to be an unforgettable night. 6. FIREWORKS DISPLAY: La Notte di San Lorenzo

The 10th August Pyrotechnic Association is organising its annual La Notte di San Lorenzo, a spectacular fireworks display held at Grand Harbour. The event, scheduled for 9 August is part of the celebrations in honour of St Lawrence, patron saint of Vittoriosa. 7. MUSIC: Notte Italiana 2019

The third edition of the Malta Concert Orchestra’s Notte Italiana will, this year, see the participation of Neville Refalo, Roger Tirazona, Alexander Schembri, Laura Bruno, Corazon and Nadia Vella under the direction of MCO Associate Conductor Joe Brown. 8. MUSIC: Sax Under the Stars III

Performing for this third edition of our most-awaited event ‘Sax under the Stars’ is Michele Lazzarini, a top saxophonist who performed widely around the globe, and who will be back again for this magical night, together with the amazing collaboration of Singer Rosanna Russo and Piano-Player Nunzio Adragna. 9. FESTIVAL: Glitch Festival 2019

Glitch Festival will take place at Gianpula Village, framed against the iconic skyline of Malta’s fortified city, Mdina. The main festival will be held on the 14 and 15 August followed by a boat-party on 16 August. More information from: https://www.glitchfestival.com/

 

10. EXHIBITION: The Gozo Traditional Agricultural Exhibition

The Gozo Traditional Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition will be held between 14 and 15 August at Villa Rundle in Gozo. Produce, livestock, Gozo's artisan work and crafts, locally produced wine, oils, and honey are all showcased during this exhibition. 11. FESTIVAL: Gozo Film Festival

This festival aims to promote local and foreign filmmakers, with a whole new section dedicated to children and teenagers. The festival is set to take place on the bastions of the Citadel, in Victoria, Gozo from 23 to 25 August. 12. MUSIC: Joseph Calleja feat. Andrea Bocelli 2019

13. FESTIVAL: Malta Craft Beer Festival 2019

Three days of the finest brews, delicious food and sweets, awesome live music from top local bands, informative beer workshops and a new pop-up shop with beers and merchandise. From 30 August to 1 September at Fort St. Elmo in Valletta. The festival is organised by Lord Chambray and The Craft Beer Company. More information from: http://craftbeerfestival.mt/
